SSEmu
by Marshall Gladstone
"SSEmu is an emulator, in that it does its best to turn your
Windows 95 machine into a Sega Saturn(tm). It currently doesn't fully
emulate it yet, but should get more faithful as new versions surface.
SSEmu is short for Sega Saturn Emulator, which is its full name, but I
just use "SSEmu" (I know, real original). As soon as it does some real
useful stuff, like display graphics or something, I'll give it a catchy
name. Until then, SSEmu will have to do.
"SSEmu currently does several things. It has a virtual Saturn
Control Unit (SCU) engine, all three Hitachi processors are partially
emulated, and music is emulated (although not exactly how the Saturn
does it). I am currently trying to find more documentation on the
Motorola 68EC000 and Yamaha FH1 sound processors. The Video Display
processors (VDP's) are currently not implemented due to a lack of
documentation. Certain video modes, such as the 720x576 2D resolution,
will be implemented (hopefully) in the next significant version. Full
faithful emulation would require a 24-bit color capable video card and
an incredibly fast 3D card, like Voodoo (3Dfx). I don't yet own a
3Dfx card, so I'll be shooting in the dark when I get to the 3D engine.
Possible supported chipsets will be ATI 3D, 3Dfx, and (maybe) Rendition.
I want everyone to have a chance to play the Saturn. There will also
most likely be a non-accelerated (basic DirectX and Direct3D) version
of the 2D and 3D engines. However, a DirectDraw and Direct3D card will
accelerate those engines."
