Emulators

Whether or not Sega's 8-bit console was a better system than Nintendo's 8-bit console is debatable, but the emulation between the systems lean greatly towards the Master System! With the awesome speed of Sparcade for those with low end 486s, to the awesome performance of Massage (for those with normal 486s -- grin), there are quite a few great emulators available! Also, the Master Gear and the Game Gear run off extremely similar hardware, and are the exact same system as far as op codes go, so all of the following emulators are Game Gear compatible as well.

MacOS
MasterGear
MS-DOS
Massage
MasterGear
Sparcade
Unix/X
MasterGear

Massage v0.72 Shareware (MS-DOS)

The latest version of Massage excels in its speed, real FM emulation, and thousands of other features. The shareware version does not feature a front end, but is extremely good for overall performance. v0.8 will be released soon (see homepage) and will be even faster (say hello to an emulator for 386s!)

MasterGear v1.0 (MS-DOS) MasterGear is a decent Master System emulator, unfortunately, its sound emulation and speed pale in comparison to Sparcade and Massage.

MasterGear Plus v1.0 (MacOS) MasterGear is the only Sega Master System / Game Gear emulator available for MacOS, and has many features. The "Plus" updated version of MasterGear added incredibly fast screen writes, an enhanced interface, and many new features!

MasterGear v1.0 (Unix/X) MasterGear was an incredibly fast moving project by Marat Fayzullan that progressed to its full version in little over a month. Alex Kidd: Lost Stars and a few other games are still buggy, but overall, MasterGear for Unix/X is an incredible emulator.

Sparcade v1.95b (MS-DOS) Although mainly an multiple arcade game emulator, Sparcade also comes with support for Master System and Game Gear games! Sparcade's Master Gear sound and speed is incredible and the compatibility is as good as any previous version of Massage or MasterGear. See the Arcade emulators section for more details on Sparcade's arcade abilities.
